The horse's hoof wall consists of Keratin, a mixture of complex proteins. Keratin is the main component required for a strong hoof wall and has a low moisture content. Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7, supports Keratin production and thus hoof quality (1,2). The addition of Biotin also supports hoof growth (3). Research has shown that continuous supplementation with Biotin has a positive significant effect on hoof quality, especially in horses whose hoof quality is poor or very poor (1).

Zinc and Copper are two trace elements important for hoof quality and structure. Zinc is an important element for developing and maintaining hoof wall cells and the keratinisation process, or cornification of the hooves (4). Copper is important for the production of enzymes essential for the formation of keratin strands that make up the hoof wall (5). Besides, the combination of Copper and Zinc protects fatty acids in the hooves from damage which can lead to dehydration of the hoof (6). A deficiency of these trace elements can result in brittle dry hooves.

Dietary amino acids are important for the production of keratin. Hoof Health contains the essential amino acid Methionine which is used in the body to produce the amino acid Cysteine. Cysteine contributes to the strong structure of Keratin which has an effect on the quality and hardness of the hoof (6).

The amounts of Biotin, Zinc and Copper in this supplement are based on study results showing that supplementing a minimum of 30mg Biotin, 20mg Copper and 100mg Zinc to a 600kg horse has a positive significant effect on hoof quality, hardness and growth (6,7).

Because the horse's hooves grow gradually, it is recommended to supplement this supplement for at least 9 months for optimal results.
